Charles Macdonald is a principal Heidrick & Struggles’ London office and a member of the Leadership Consulting Practice. Previously, he was with Decision Strategies International, a global strategy and leadership development advisory firm acquired by Heidrick & Struggles in 2016.
Charles develops executives and their teams. He works with the organization to open the thinking, behaviors, skills, and processes to develop and execute strategy. His particular interest is in changing mind-sets to enable the fullest participation of employees in creatively shaping and engaging with strategy.
He has broad experience in strategy and organizational development programs in companies seeking radical change. These have included organizations in turnaround, corporate restructuring, post-merger integration, strategic and cultural transformations, start-ups and post-start-up growth. He has worked with clients in the healthcare, oil and gas, financial services and consumer goods industries in Europe, North America, Asia and the UK public sector.
He started his consulting career at AT Kearney. Prior to consulting, Charles was a captain in the British Army where he was the mayor of a town of refugees in Bosnia and mentored the District Governor of Sangin in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. His officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and subsequent commands in a reconnaissance regiment, gave him a deep insight into both formal and informal leadership. He speaks fluent French and German.
Charles has a law degree from the University of Oxford, a master of business administration degree from Harvard Business School and diploma in psychoanalytic psychology from Birkbeck, University of London.
